We are in prayer for the family of Kobe and Gianna Bryant, and the other families that have been impacted by this tragic accident.
We are struck by the idea that Kobe was participating in an activity that many of us as parents have engaged in. He was taking his daughter and her teammates to their basketball game. How many of us as parents have put our kids in a vehicle and taken them to sports, or music, or some other event. How about all of the hours of watching and waiting. Or in some cases, if you have a little experience, you will find yourself as a parent being volunteered to coach. Which is what Kobe did.
This is what parents do. Parents sacrifice their time and energy for their kids. This is an example of unconditional love. For all of the kids that Kobe coached, and mentored, and inspired, He was demonstrating how God loves us unconditionally. “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13 NLT
Not only did Kobe demonstrate God’s unconditional love, but he also demonstrated how to live in God’s purpose. At an early age, God gave Kobe a gift for being good at Basketball. And God opened a door for Kobe to use his gift to help others. I saw on an interview that Kobe once said that he had played a game with a temperature, and even flu symptoms. He was determined to use his gift. That is the way it is when God gives you purpose. You realize it doesn’t matter what happens to you. The only thing that matters is that you do everything you can to fulfill His is purpose.
Kobe also demonstrated awareness of the moment God placed Him in. How many times did we see Kobe come down the court and signal for the basketball? This wasn’t ego. He was using the gift God gave him for that moment. Kobe knew that the moment would not wait. God’s purpose in our lives is for right now. We can’t delay His purpose, and we can’t hand our purpose to someone else. Kobe demonstrated what it is to be a Servant of the Most High when He calls us to do His will.
This is where we take comfort. We are sad, and we will be sad for some time. But we know God is going to add Kobe to that great “Cloud of Witnesses” that encourage us to trust God with our lives. Plus we also live in the certainty of knowing that God is preparing all of His servants for that great wedding supper. “And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.” Revelation 19:9 KJV On this day our momentary sadness will be overtaken by extreme joy, when we see Jesus and our loved ones again.
