What is the important “If” that Jesus gave? It was on the eve of Passover and Jesus was gathered with His disciples for the Last Supper. As had been foretold, the devil was lurking to enter Judas the betrayer. The prophecy was being fulfilled and Jesus knew his time was near. He told them that: “When he was gone, he would be glorified and God would be glorified through him.” John 13:31 NIV But, there was one more thing new thing that he wanted them to know. The “if” that everyone needs to follow. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 NIV
How important this commandment must be for Jesus to give it just before going to the cross. A new commandment and a great commandment. “Love one another. As I have loved you, so must you love one another.” We must love one another! Why must we love as Jesus loved? “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples.” It is love that shows your discipleship, “If you love one another.” It is love that glorifies God. Let us make no mistake about who we are to love, agape love, like Jesus loves us? We are to love one another! It all began with love: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17 NIV Jesus made it eternal:
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” Revelation 22:12-13 NIV How do you know who are Jesuses disciples? The people who, “Must love one another” and “if” we “Love one another,” we will all see the glory of the Lord in our lives. This commandment goes out to the world and all who want to be disciples of Jesus Christ you “must love one another.” |
