There is a powerful line in the classic Earth, Wind & Fire song, “Reasons,” that always catches my attention:
“Please, let me love you / With all my might…”
While that song was originally written about a fleeting romance, we can easily point those exact lyrics directly to God our father. Think about it: God is constantly trying to love us with everything He has.
How does an infinite God show that kind of absolute devotion? He poured Himself into a human body and went the cross. God risked it all to show His love to us, inspiring the old hymn’s truth: “Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe.”
Rushing to the Dessert
Too often, especially in our fast-paced American culture, we are “Rushing to the rapture.” It’s a lot like demanding dessert before we’ve even started a five-course dinner. We are so eager to get to the end of the story that we don’t take the time to actually experience God’s love right now, in the present moment.
It has been said that the Bible is God’s (our father) love letter to us(His children). But let us consider that the whole of human history is God’s love song for us.
Every single page of history is being crafted, shaped, and molded so that God can show each and every one of us how deeply we are cherished. Whether we fully understand it or not, God is constantly at work in this very moment.
If you look closely at your own life, you can see God moving. If you really pay attention, you’ll see He is right there, working through the problems alongside us. God is with us through:
- Our disappointments when things don’t go our way.
- Our mistakes when we slip up.
- Our deepest hurts when life feels heavy.
Love in the Midst of Broken Grocery Bags
God doesn’t just show His love through theology; He shows it through people. He is rushing to our aid in the midst of our everyday situations.
Just the other day, I was walking home from the grocery store when my grocery bag broke, sending my groceries spilling everywhere. Out of nowhere, a gentleman stopped his truck, jumped out, and offered me a ride.
Even when I told him I only lived about 50 yards away, his heart was so moved to help that he watched over me to make sure I got my things together safely.
Not long after that, I managed to drop my mail on the sidewalk. A neighbor I didn’t even know knocked on my door a little later to return it to me.
These aren’t just random coincidences. God is inspiring people we don’t even know—people we might think we have absolutely nothing in common with—to step up. We share one profound, undeniable bond: God’s love. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gave us direction:
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” — Matthew 22:37-39
When we allow ourselves to receive His love, we naturally start showing that same love to the people around us.
Let brotherly love continue. It’s time to slow down, skip the rush for early dessert, and realize that we have the power to start a whole new world—one small act of love at a time.
