We originally published this blog on Nov 23, 2014 based on my experience at a Men’s Retreat (at Meadowkirk Retreat Center) with our good friends at Centreville Presbyterian Church.
One morning, I had the experience of seeing the sunrise at the Branton Observatory. This Observatory is named for Henry Coxe Branton who was a Presbyterian Elder and NASA Physicist. The inscription is dedicated to the Glory of God as described in Psalms “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalms 19:1 NIV
On this particular morning, God was showing off. As the sun came up, there were roosters crowing, a braying donkey, birds, geese, and wild turkeys. All awaking and praising God.
Our retreat focused on the “33 Series, A Man and His Traps” as our study guide. Great stuff. Teaching us about what the authors refer to as “Deep Idols” in our lives. These are the idols of Control, Significance, and Comfort and are present when we allow anything other than God to become the center of our hearts.
It is good also to share this with men. Unfortunately, we don’t do that enough. Men need each other for encouragement, honesty, and to share life.
I personally got to give and receive a lot of feedback on a daily basis based on mistakes or corrections, but one of the brothers there, Jerry, said to me that mistakes are opportunities to provide encouragement. What that means to me is that I can turn the criticism cycle upside down. Encouragement first. What Jerry also pointed out is that everybody stills needs constructive criticism, but you have to put it in a way they understand it to meet their needs.
It was a great day, with great guys. Great weekend.
