Many of us observe Ash Wednesday by placing ashes on our foreheads. These ashes represent repentance. What does it mean to repent? The Biblical definition of repentance is to turn your heart to God. Jesus called us to repent. Matthew 4:17 (NIV)
“From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
We see even from the beginning in the story of Adam and Eve that God gives us the choice to follow Him. Just like Adam and Eve, we are also given the choice to live in fellowship with Him.
It’s like that famous football player who has the words “Choose Love” on the back of his football helmet. Every day we have a spiritual and a moral choice to turn our hearts to God, and to show love to our fellow man. Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV)
“Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ‘This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
God is clear in this passage, He doesn’t give us an opportunity to claim we love God, and not love our neighbor. If you want change in your heart, and in your country, and in your world, you will have to make a choice. You will have to love God and your neighbor.
