As we continue our study in the Story Bible, we come to a pivotal event in the story of Israel’s deliverance from bondage. At this point, we see Moses in the desert tending sheep for his father-in-law Jethro. In the desert, Moses sees a burning bush, and he goes to investigate. Moses encounters God in the burning bush, and God reveals His plan for the deliverance of Israel to Moses.
The plan involves Moses going back to Egypt and requesting that Pharaoh release God’s people. Moses immediately protests the plan, and tells God that he (Moses) is not eloquent in words. After a brief discussion, God assures Moses that He would be with him. Exodus 3:12-14 (NIV)
“And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.” Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.”
The work God performed was not dependent upon the qualifications of Moses, or hindered by the doubts Moses had. In fact, as Pastor Randy Frazee points out, the lack of qualification by Moses becomes a conduit for God’s strength.
The Apostle Paul points out in 2 Cor 12:9 (NIV) “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
God is not interested in our qualifications. He is interested in us. He loves us, and wants to be with us. In this story, God creates plagues, He delivers His People, and he defeats Pharaoh and his army. And God is able to deliver us no matter what we are going through. We can be certain that the God we serve is the God who delivers us.
