Serving God in the Face of Hardship

This week we are studying the Book of Job which is believed to be the earliest book of the Bible.  What you see in the Book of Job is the entire Gospel, in its simplest, most uncomplicated form. In the beginning of the Book of Job, God looks down at Job, and He sees him as a “perfect and an upright man”. We see Job as a man who served God, but had to ensure hardships. Job 1:8-9 (KJV) “And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? “

God can look at us and see us as “perfect” and “blameless” because of the shed blood of Jesus that makes us perfect and blameless in His sight. Hebrews 13:20-21 (KJV) ‘Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. ‘

It’s just like the hymn writer Robert Lowrey wrote: “What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. “

Some of us are wondering what is going to happen to us. Right now, we see people trying to get all of their stuff. As that famous band the talking Heads wrote “Once In a Lifetime” “And you may ask yourself, “How do I work this?” And you may ask yourself, “Where is that large automobile?” And you may tell yourself, “This is not my beautiful house.”

 But I am here to tell you, that when somebody is preparing to take all you got, just like Satan took all Job had, the first thing that God says about you is: “Look at my perfect servant”. The next thing we see God do in the Book of Job, is to remind Job that He is in charge of the universe. Job 38:1-4 (KJV) “Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel By words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; For I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding. “

God brought Job, and us to a place of contentment, because we come to the idea that we are His servants. He is going to use our lives the way He wants to use our lives. My personal testimony: Once when I was going through a tough time, God put this on my heart: “God is in charge, He loves me, and He has a plan for my life”. The Apostle Paul wrote about contentment and remembering that God is in charge while imprisoned in Rome. Philippians 4:11-13 (NIV)I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
