How Do you Think of Yourself?

Are you holding on to an idea of who you think you are? Are you in a position to have a high title? At times, We watch the Hallmark Channel and there is always a Prince or Princess falling in love. When the writers produce a love story outside of a kingdom, it is usually a Journalist, Author and even Santa. We watch diligently caught up in the romance or mystery of the moment. They can write about those stories year after year because we give them importance and status. Who doesn’t want to be a Prince or Princess?

So we ask the question, How do you think of yourself? Are you the boss, the Principal, Pastor, or servant? Perhaps you are aspiring to be great and your time has yet to come. We all have various reasons why we give credence to the positions that marks our lives. But, today’s scripture gives us pause.

“Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death —and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion.” Philippians 2:5-8 MSG

Wow! Do you think of yourself the way Christ Jesus thought of himself as selfless and obedient! How humble are we in general? How many hearts were broken when Prince Harry got married. We are always seeking the next big step in our lives, but the Bible teaches us and instructs us to think of others better than our selves. Who does that? How about Jesus, God born a king becoming a slave for us. He gave up his life for our sins. Died on the cross. It was the worst death, crucifixion! He gave up all that status to help the world. The thought that jumps in my mind is that he could have called 10,000 angels. Praise God he did not, but He humbled himself for us! So ask the question, How do I think of myself? Jesus showed and told us how to live.

“If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care —then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep- spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”  Philippians 2:1-4MSG

Jesus, please help us to seek your purpose for our lives, to be humble and selfless always willing to lend a hand. Amen
