Honoring Our Fathers

Listen

I remember when I got to see my son in his first day of full contact football, he is a much better football player than I ever was. However, I need to be transparent here. My Father was a Head Football Coach for 17 years, and Assistant Football Coach for 9 years. You would expect that I would be a good player. I was terrible.

My Father never ever expressed disappointment, but as a parent, I am sure that he could not understand how a kid who grew up around football could be so bad. Anyone who knew my him would have expected me to be like my father the football player. They would have been disappointed by my football skills.

However, I am like my father in other ways such as Pastoring, Math, and Writing. In his case, my father called in the sports scores, and wrote news articles.  I remember all of the long hours after a game, and waiting for him to call in the football scores. I also vividly remember the smell of the locker room after everyone was gone!

I honor my earthly father by being the person God called me to be, and fulfilling God’s calling for my life.  In much the same way, my son will go on to fulfill the purpose God has for his life.

So now let me share the Biblical application with you. When Jesus began His public ministry, He identified Himself with His Father. In John 10:30, He exclaims: “I and the Father are one”. Anyone listening to Jesus at that time would have understood that Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah. The common view at that time was that the Messiah would deliver the nation of Israel using military and political means. Many people expected Jesus to be a military leader much like King David. Instead, Jesus died a humiliating death on a cross, crucified between two criminals. So, you can understand their deep disappointment.

Their disappointment rested on the fact that they compared Jesus to King David the warrior. They overlooked the true nature of David which was that he was also a worshiper. David sought after God’s heart.  This is why the Bible refers to him as the man after “God’s Heart”. In this respect, Jesus’ nature was identical to David’s nature. Jesus sought the Father’s Heart in relationship. And His death on the cross was the only way for us to also have relationship with God.

If you find yourself disappointed in your view of Jesus, you should look for Jesus as the one who brings us into relationship with God. If you are looking for the relationship Jesus, you will never be disappointed.
