Godly Wisdom

Godly wisdom
Listen

We just got the chance to see the Taylor Swift “Eras” concert movie. The video was filmed at the Sofi stadium in Los Angeles for her last U.S. tour date. It was Awesome!

This concert was unlike any concert you have ever seen. Taylor Swift and her team take all of the tools that are usually used to create a concert (e.g., music, lights, costumes, video, etc.) and they create a totally next level experience. They took everyday tools, and made a once in a lifetime experience. How did she do this?

What I can share (without spoiling) is that Taylor spoke a few times about her development as a writer. You can see in her songs that she writes about her experiences in life, but she also writes about fictional characters, and their emotions. She puts herself in the place of these characters and their emotions. Taylor took everyday emotions and transformed them into inspiration. How did she do this?

I once had the honor to meet Vint Cerf, one of the inventors of the Internet. I wonder if Mr. Cerf ever imagined that the Internet, he invented would be used by artists like Taylor Swift to reach out and touch the lives of billions of people? How did Vint and his colleagues take ordinary things like electronics, and information, and wires, and build a worldwide network?

For both Taylor Swift and Vint Cerf, their skills and their vision are a type of Wisdom. Let’s examine what the Bible refers to as Wisdom.

What is Wisdom? In their text “Reading the Bible for all its Worth” authors Douglas Stuart and Gordon Fee offer that, biblically speaking, “Wisdom is the ability to make godly choices in life.” You achieve this goal by applying God’s truth to your life, so that your choices will indeed be Godly. Wisdom, therefore, as authors point out, is not a matter of how smart we are, it is a matter of depending on God to help us make choices throughout our lives.

The authors also point out that God provides Wisdom to do the job that you have been called to do.  In this scripture we see an example of God providing Wisdom to one of the artists who helped to build the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle. Exodus 31:2-4 (NIV) “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze.”

God gave Bezalel Wisdom (understanding) for his calling. If we ask, God will give us Wisdom as well. We see this in James 1:5 (NIV) “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

What are the benefits of Wisdom? God tells us in His Word that obtaining Wisdom from Him has benefits. Proverbs 3:13-18 (NIV) “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.”

God is waiting to walk with you. Won’t you try Him today?
