God is Giving Us A New Love Story

Listen

Many of us are familiar with the Biblical story of King David and Bathsheba.
2 Samuel 11:2-5 (NIV)

“One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him and he slept with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.) Then she went back home. The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”

I have to start out this lesson with repentance. I have previously preached about the beauty of Bathsheba, as if Bathsheba’s beauty created an opportunity for King David’s sin. How did King David and Bathsheba get into this situation? Or more specifically, where was God when David was creating an adulterous and murderous situation? God was where He always is – on His throne. This situation came about not because of Bathsheba’s beauty, but because the Nation of Israel asked for a king, even over God’s objections. God warned Israel that kings take what they want, apparently even good kings.

Even though David was a man “After God’s Heart”, on this night, he threw caution to the wind, and behaved as if everything in the Kingdom belonged to him, even another man’s wife. To illustrate this point to our Bible study group this past weekend, we shared this humorous vide of the “Veggie Tales” version of this tragic tale. https://youtu.be/UpsFbQWHZnE?feature=shared

This encounter between King David and Bathsheba ended in tragedy for not only The Nation of Israel, but for David and Bathsheba: Bathsheba lost her husband Uriah, and the baby born to Bathsheba and David. In addition, God gave the prophet Nathan a message for King David: 2Samuel 12:10 NIV

“Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.”

For a moment, let’s focus on Bathsheba. Bathsheba did not ask to be in this situation. She was living her best life before that night with King David. She already had her knight in shining armor Uriah, who was a brave man of integrity. But all of her plans for her life with Uriah came to an end. Despite everything that had happened, God still put Himself into Bathsheba’s love story.

I will illustrate it this way. With help from my cousin and mentor, Allen, I recently got to visit my Great, Great, Grandmother’s grave. She started her life in slavery as a young girl. She survived a situation she didn’t create and couldn’t control. But God blessed her with many descendants who enjoyed lives that she never could have dreamed of as an enslaved person.

God gave Bathsheba a son, Solomon, who was also named Jedidiah, which means “Beloved of the Lord”. God gave Bathsheba a son whom God Himself named “Beloved”, who would be one of the greatest kings of Israel.
2 Samuel 12:24-25 (NIV)

‘Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The Lord loved him; and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah. ‘

God also gave Bathsheba another descendent, which was Jesus. Matthew 1:1-6 (NIV)

‘This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David,…David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife’

Here is the lesson:  When life is giving us the worst, God has already given us the best, which is His son, Jesus. Look around in your bad situation. Jesus is right there!
