Many of us are familiar with the story of Cinderella. Cinderella was forced to work performing all of the dirty jobs in her family. Her fairy godmother gave her a gown and a carriage, and she was able to go to the royal ball where she met the prince. However, she ran away at midnight, and the prince was left with only her glass slipper. This Disney story is very similar to the Bible story in the Song of Solomon.
We find this description of the biblical Cinderella in “Briefing the Bible”, by Dr. J. Vernon McGee: “The story is of a poor family of Ephraim in which there is a girl who is a sort of Cinderella. The poverty of the family forces her into the vineyards where she meets the young shepherd. The story of their love is first told. Then he leaves her with the promise that he will return. He is absent for a long time, and she despairs of his return. One day, the electrifying word is shouted along the way that King Solomon is coming by. She is not interested and takes no further notice until word is brought to her that King Solomon wants to see her. She is puzzled until she is brought into his presence where she recognizes him as her shepherd lover. He takes her to his palace in Jerusalem where most of the song takes place.”
This Shulamite lady was in the vineyard. She was all dirty, her clothes were messed up and she didn’t have a hairdo, but King Solomon looked at her in that vineyard and he wanted her. He decided that he wanted her to be his queen, even though she was all messed up and dirty, he saw through all of that, and he loved her.
This is a perfect example of the gospel of Jesus Christ. While we were yet in sin He saw us, and He loved us, and He decided that we were going to be His bride. Romans 5:8 NIV “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
It’s not about our “Hairdo” it’s about your “Holy Spirit Hairdo “. It is the Holy Spirit, that’s giving us a makeover. He transforms us from sin to Life. It is the Holy Spirit that clothes us in the wedding garment in preparation for the wedding feast. God doesn’t look down and see our “Hairdo”. He sees the righteousness of Christ and it is the Holy Spirit that keeps us in righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:5 NIV “Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.”
And we only need one response and that response is to keep living Holy before God. God is not looking at our clothes or makeup or our hair. He is looking at the life we live in Him. Holiness is this the outward sign of someone who is prepared live with Him forever. It’s the Holy Spirit that cleans us, keeps us, and prepares us for our daily walk with Christ. We are the bride that is invited to the wedding feast with Jesus (the Lamb). Revelation 19:7-8 (NIV) ‘Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.) ‘
In today’s world, we need to stay focused on who we are in Christ, and where we are going. As the Bride of Christ, we are to prepare ourselves daily by living Holy before God. We have a reservation at the wedding table, and nothing can stop us from getting to that wedding. Christ has called us and forgave us and He’s bigger than all of our mistakes. Jesus described the life we now live, as having “oil” in our lamps. Our good friends Pastor Mike and Susan sing this song:
“Give Me Oil in my Lamp, Keep me burning”.
This song instructs us to always be ready for the return of the Bridegroom. Matthew 25:1-3 (NIV) “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’’
