Don’t be Strangers

“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. (Revelation 3:20 NLT) These days we do lots of shopping online, and strangers are always at our doorstep. We use Amazon, Uber Eats, grocery store delivery, and many more conveniences to make life easier. We are becoming accustomed to having strangers at our doors.

Inadvertently, we are overjoyed to see our friends stop by to say “Hello” because they were in the neighborhood. We know it’s our friends before opening the door because we are familiar with their voices unlike the Amazon person’s voice. What makes our friends’ voices familiar to us? We spend time with our friends. We celebrate each other’s special days. We go out to eat, or invite them over for a meal. We learn their voices through day-to-day interactions. When our friends knock on the door, we can open it without hesitation, unlike strangers whom we may hesitate to open the door.

Jesus said, “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. (Revelation 3:20 NLT). If Jesus knocks on your door, will He be greeted as a friend or stranger? Do you truly know His voice and will you greet Him with the joy of a friend? Would Jesus be greeted as a stranger? Will you be at the door looking for a delivery truck person because you don’t know who this is at your door?

The key to this scripture is that you have to know Jesus’ voice. Back in John’s time knowing the person was how things got done. In those days, trust was based on strong relationships.  Today, we hand over our money and personal information to strangers with ease these days. It’s all in the click of a button.

Spend the time with Jesus and get to know Him.  Know when He is talking. Know when the Spirit is drawing you to His work. Christians are being challenged all over the world. It is critical for us to know when it is Jesus knocking at our door. Be so familiar with Jesus that He can be welcomed in to have a great meal. Again, spend time with Jesus. Please, don’t be strangers!
