We’ve previously discussed the importance of selflessness, as taught in Philippians 2:1-4“If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care —then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.” Philippians 2:1-4 MSG. It’s a powerful scripture that urges us to put aside our selfish desires, build authentic relationships, and lend a helping hand.

Equally important is the practice of self-care. Balancing physical and mental well-being with the call to be selfless can be challenging, and can sometimes lead to exhaustion. Jesus recognized the inevitability of burnout and taught us how to find rest. He presents an opportunity to conquer burnout and enjoy the rest only He can provide. His teachings guide us to a respite only He can provide. As stated in Matthew 11:28 NLT, He calls upon the weary and the burdened to find rest in Him. Burnouts happen. Our minds, bodies, even our souls get tired. Jesus understands this and promises rest and comfort, even in the toughest of times. So, why not take Him up on His offer? Let us go to Jesus and get rest.
