We recently decided to donate some furniture to the Habitat Store. This is one of our favorite stores. You can drive up to the back, donate some of your possessions, and then go shopping for more stuff. This day, we were donating two media chairs. We recently downsized our living conditions, so we no longer had room for these full-size chairs.
It made me remember when we bought them. We were so excited, we took them home and carried them into the house, and it seemed like they were as light as a feather. But now that we are parting with them, these chairs seem to be very heavy. The chairs don’t want to leave!
This is how it is with the distractions we have in our lives. Distractions come very easily. Distractions always seem so appealing, and we are always so willing to be distracted. But distractions always come with a cost. As Rev W. F. McIntosh Jr. used to tell us, “You have to count the costs”.
In the book of Hebrews, the Apostle Paul describes the cost of our distractions as weights. Paul draws a picture of the Christian life as a race, and distractions as weights that slow us down. Paul tells us to drop the weight of our distractions and run the race. Hebrews 12:1 (NIV) “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,”
This simple picture convinces us that running our race without distraction allows us to focus on our goal. Our goal is to run towards Jesus. Philippians 3:14 (NIV) “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Let us follow God’s Word. Choose to live a life of faith in Jesus and remove anything that is keeping you from putting your faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus will be there to run the race with you because He is faithful. Brothers and Sisters, we will see you at the finish line!
