We recently heard a pastor speak about the meaning of this season of the year. This season between summer and fall is a time of preparation: Parents prepare their students to return to school, and older students prepare to go back to college. We see ads on television about “Back to School” sales for new clothes. Kids are excited about getting a new look for school!
Teachers are excited about the new year. Teachers are the heroes of our society. They spend their own time and money preparing their classrooms for the new school year. They are eagerly waiting for their new students. Lots of things to teach and to learn.
The Apostle Paul also speaks to us about preparation. He explains to us how to prepare ourselves for living our lives in Jesus. Ephesians 6:14-18 NIV “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
Paul tells us to: (1) Stand Firm in the Truth, (2) Take (Put on) the Shield of Faith and the Helmet of Salvation, (3) Pray always.
What does it mean to stand firm in the Truth? It means you are not following what is trending, but you are following God’s Truth which is the same yesterday, today, and forever. God’s Word teaches us and instructs us. We are students of His Word. The Apostle also tells us we need to put on our protection. The shield of Faith protects our hearts, and the helmet of Salvation protects our mind and our thoughts.
Lastly, the Apostle encourages us to never stop praying. Prayer is what keeps us connected to what God is doing in our lives, and the lives of those around us. Prayer also breaks the chains that bind us. Keep praying!
