This is a familiar story to many of us. This is a story of King David’s sin when he slept with Bathsheba who was the wife of Uriah the Hittite. He then attempting to cover up his sin, ordered his military General to have Uriah the Hittite killed. King David married Bathsheba and they had a child. But King David’s sin was uncovered.
The prophet Nathan confronted King David with a story about a rich man that stole a lamb from a poor man. The King was so angry at this story that he pronounced judgement on the rich man in the story. But the prophet Nathan reveal that the story was really about King David’s sin. “Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.” (2 Samuel 12:7-9 NIV).
King David’s sin was tragic, but his response was correct. King David said “…I have sinned against the Lord.” (2 Samuel 12:13 NIV) King David did not try to blame someone else for his sin (like Adam in the garden of Eden) or even try to make an excuse for it like King Saul did. David simply confessed his sin.
What is the lesson for us when we have sin in our lives? Love God the way David loved God. King David loved God with all of his heart, and he prioritized his relationship with God above everything else.
- Humbly confess our sins before God. Let us be honest with God and with ourselves. King David was humble before God and God spared his life, even though he had to suffer other consequences.
- Change direction. David immediately confessed his sin, and then focused on repairing his broken relationship with God.
Have you discovered sin in your life? Have you confessed your sin? You and I can have the same relationship with God that King David had. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9 KJV)
