What is the heart? The heart is very important. In medical terms the heart pumps blood through our bodies. But the Bible describes the heart as the part of us that makes spiritual decisions. The heart is where we decide to believe God. In the book of 1 Samuel, we see that God looks at the heart to see our motives, and to see if we believe in Him. The condition of his heart is how God decided to select David as the new king of the nation of Israel. “…The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV). What’s in your heart?
David became King because of his heart. David loved God, and wanted to serve Him. David’s love for God and his devotion to Him led him to victory in his battle against the Philistine giant, Goliath. David said to the Philistine: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord ’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” (1 Samuel 17:45-47 NIV).
The best way to describe David’s heart is that he surrounded himself with God’s love. David had a relationship with our mighty God. He served the Lord with his whole heart. What is in your heart? Is it surround by God’s love? Does it desire to fully trust God? Will He see in your heart what he saw in David’s heart? “After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” (Acts 13:22 NIV).
Studying David helps us look into God’s heart and what he sees in us. Jesus also taught us about the heart God wants to see, when answering the Pharisees question about the greatest commandments. “Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37 NIV). Both David and Jesus taught us that our Love for God is the most important thing to be in our hearts. We ask you today, “What’s in your heart”?
